Beginning with the death of her parents, Charlotte faces many problems, but nothing can destroy her dreams.  In fact, as she goes through the fire, she grows stronger and more determined.  Holding fast to the love of a horse, the support of a friend, and the wisdom of an elderly stable master who had escaped slavery, Charlotte chooses to seek her own freedom and manages to ride into history.  *
