Lord of the Deep by Graham Salisbury (not Recommended by Kids' Wings because of vulgarities) Thirteen-year-old Mikey is the youngest deckhand to work on a charter fishing boat in this Hawaiian harbor. Mikey and his stepfather, Bill, set out on a fishing expedition they will never forget. On this trip, two rude, beer-drinking, foul-mouthed jerks will stretch their patience and character to their breaking point as they set out to catch a marlin or swordfish as many people call them. Along for the ride is the cute 15-year-old Ali who forms a special relationship with Mikey. Fishing is great, but there is a lot to learn about people, even the ones you think you know. Written at middle school reading level, much of the technical language will need some scaffolding for younger kids. (Many curse words are included in the text.) Research Links for Lord of the Deep
