Peanut
played on the sand lot
With all her friends in
the field.
Their ball was a tape-covered round rock
Their bat was a branch that could give it a sock.
Peanut dreamed of playing on real teams
But mountains stood in her way.
She’d still play every day
Til’ they moved from her way
At the old ball game!
Her
skin was the color of chocolate.
Her will was the power of steel.
Jim Crow laws towered before her:
Back of the bus and no coloreds could deal,
So she persevered and got better
She learned that knuckleball pitch!
Fast balls soared, change-ups roared
Not a fan there was bored
At the old ball game!
