When Maddie came to the East Tennessee Children's Home, she and little Ricky Ray began work on two scrapbooks that held their dreams: The Book of Houses and the Book of People. Maddie hoped the new girl, Murphy, would be a person who felt like home and would appreciate their scrapbooks. Murphy's wild stories of her life before the children's home puzzled Maddie who tried to share her own stories of being shuttled from home to home. Along with two other kids from the home and an obnoxious misfit from school, Maddie and Murphy set out to build a home of their own....a fort...where their stories and dreams could be shared.
