Kids' Wings Activities for The Hound of Rowan

Kids' Wings cannot recommend The Hound of Rowan for grades 3-6...nor for anyone else seeking high quality of literature that models character traits we all seek to instill in our youth. If the old saying "You are what you eat" is true, then the flip side, "You are what you read," is equally true.

Our specific concerns include:

-Bloody scenes of violence, evil, and kidnapping (the things of which nightmares are made)
-Vocabulary and syntax above most advanced students' levels
-Frightening mystical, evil beings
-Poor examples of decision-making by the main character
-A main character who chooses not to follow the rules but who is a superhero because of some mystical "spark"
-The use of God's-name in exclamations
-The all-too-obvious parallel to the first Harry Potter which has higher literary quality

Because we do not recommend it, we have included only a bare number of activities in our Gifts and Givers literature collection.
