"We
grabbed hands and raised our arms to the heavens."
The
Hallelujah Flight
by Phil Bildner,
illustrated by John Holyfield
James Banning had
a dream. He dreamed of being the first African-American pilot to make
a transcontinental flight across North America in 1932. Along with his
mechanic, Thomas Allen, Banning cobbled together pieces of a dilapidated
OXX6 Eagle Rock bi-wing airplane and chugged from California to New York
in 21 days. How did he do it with no money? What unimaginable
plan enabled the two unlikely men to embark on an extraordinary adventure
into history?
The
Hallelujah Flight by Phil Bildner is a fictionalized story of thie
flight.
The Kids' Wings literature
guide invites group discussion, prediction, drama, problem-solving, and
skill building. Teachers who want students to have an appreciation of
African-American history will want make this intermediate-level picture
book part of their classroom libraries.
