Bake Sale

Graphic Novel

Cupcake and his best friend Eggplant head up the all-food cast of characters in this funny, 158- page graphic novel. Cupcake uses his culinary skills at his Sweet Tooth Bakery, working hard to keep his customers happy with his delicious confections including cupcakes, pies, cakes, and other spectacular desserts like marzipan. He even shares his marvelous recipes with the reader in the book. So, clear the kitchen! The reader will necessarily become a chef and may dream of becoming an entrepreneur who opens his own bakery!

When Eggplant says he will be going to visit a famous chef relative, Cupcake wants to go. How will he ever get enough money to go along? Here's where friendship comes in! Eggplant who recently lost his job steps in to watch the store while Cupcake ventures out to special events to sell his delicacies. Dialogue betwee the characters helps to move the storyline cartoons along.

Having foods as characters may be confusing to younger kids and bothersome to skeptical older students. Questions may arise:

How can Cupcake make cupcakes for other foods to eat? Isn't that canibalism?
Why is Eggplant called Eggplant instead of real names like George or Sam?
How can a cupcake character enjoy an afternoon in a sauna where his paper wrapper embarrassingly starts to peel? Why doesn't his icing peel?
Why isn't eggplant cooked in the sauna?

Bake Sale by Sara Varon may be the silliest graphic novel available anywhere, but then, what do your students enjoy more than SILLY? The vocabulary is challenging, and the friendship-theme enlightening. But, it will invite the reader to the kitchen to cook up some yummy treats. The 7-page Kids Wings unit for Bake Sale will catch the interest of the reader and 50-slide Jeopardy-type game will review the story and invite students to discuss the story line and characterization.
