Except
for the sweltering heat, summer in Hanging Moss, Mississippi, in 1964
promised to be terrific for Gloriana Hemphill. Sharing a birthday with
the United States of America, Glory loved the fireworks that would accompany
her party! She loved fried chicken, Elvis songs, cooling off in the community
pool, and when the sun went down, the lightning bugs that danced in the
air as she playing kick the can with her friend Frankie and the other
neighborhood kids. She knew her twelfth birthday would be the best yet.
But
Frankie was the first one to hint at trouble ahead. How could
they close her swimming pool before her birthday? Did it have something
to do with the new girl who moved to Hanging Moss from the North? (The
one who wears heavy black socks with clodhopper sandles and drank out
of the wrong water fountain.) The pool had always been segregated.
That was okay, wasn't it? Why should that change? How could everyone cool
off it the pools were closed?
Glory
had to dig deeper into what was happening to discover answers, to understand
why feelings were hurt, and what was NOT fair. Friendships and family
got all mixed up in hateful talk and accusations. The town is split by
angry opinion that is turning to hurtful actions. What is right? What
is true? Who is lying?
What
about Emma? ... Emma whose skin was the color of coffee, Emma who had
cooked, cleaned, and cared for Glory and her older sister for years since
their mother died ... Will Emma be able to explain? Will Emma help her
to understand? But why is Emma upset? Doesn't she want Glory to get to
go swimming?
Glory
Be by Augusta Scattergood allows readers to see history through the
eyes of those who experienced it and felt the emotions that were stirred
as our country faced long-needed changes to repair wrongs that had become
embedded in its traditions since the Emancipation Proclamation.
This
novel and the Kids Wings literature guide can help readers analyze a social
problem with the courage and determination that was necessary to change
"what we have always done" into what is right because "all
men are created equal."
The
Kids Wings literature guide and Jeopardy-type game provide beautifully
planned curriculum that leads to the development of character, academic
skills, teambuilding, and guarantees thoughtful social and exciting academic
growth for every classroom. It is an essential part of every home and
school library.
