The Year of the Book

Junior Library Guild Selection

Anna Wang loves to read. Her favorite books are probably some of yours, too. She has found that books are more dependable than friends. Whenever Anna finds herself in uncomfortable situations like being left out, she flips open her newest book friend and snuggles contentedly into its welcoming pages.

The Year of the Book introduces you to Anna, a Chinese-American fourth-grader who finds friendship complicated. The popular Allison can change friends with the breeze of her whisper that can leave Anna rejected and alone. As Anna begins her school year, she feels abandoned by her best friend, Laura, who begins to hang out with Allison and Lucy.

Encouraged by her family, Anna discovers creative ways to finding happiness in sewing, cooking, crafts, and games. She even makes a special friend in the elderly Mr. Shepherd whose apartment her mother cleans every week. Ray, the crossing guard, proves to be another encouraging friend.

Friendship problems become the thread that runs through the months, but other themes provide alternating challenge and enjoyment. Always, her consistent friends are books. Luckily, her teacher, Ms. Simmons, lets her read what ever she likes, and she likes many! In her class, Anna masters the writing process, and finishes the year with a cheer in persuasive writing.

In addition, Anna goes to Chinese School on Saturdays where she is introduced to drawing Chinese characters, learning new words, and meeting and tutoring a special friend, Camille.

In The Year of the Book by Andrea Cheng, readers can identify with familiar friendship problems and will find joy in cheering on Anna. Will Anna ever find the same satisfaction in frienship as she does in books? You will enjoy the story of her school year, told in present tense in the first person voice by Anna, herself. The events in the school year follow a month-by-month, holiday-by-holiday chronicle of problems, personalities, and celebrations that touch and shape her life. You will love the way she grows in empathy for others.
