by Paul Fleischman

Outcast.  Different.  Rejected.  Bookworm.  That was Wesley before summer vacation started.  Always inventive, when summer vacation begins, he takes the knowledge he gleaned from books and school to grow his own garden and then, his own unique civilization, complete with a peculiar  plant.  This plant provides his food, clothing, shelter, and fun!  The young entrepreneur who invented his way out of the refining fire now takes on a new role in his new civilization...or is it his old civilization?*

Like most people who do great or unusual things in their lives, Wesley went through “the fire” and came out with a stronger character. He learned to develop his creative talents to solve his problems and to help others. That the way “the fire” is. What comes out of the fire depends on the person. Some with strong “roots” grow “character” and live to be a blessing to their civilization. Others grow “angry” and live to be a curse to their civilization.
