How Tia Lola Came to Stay
by Julia Alvarez
Tia
Lola brings sunshine to Vermont after a sad divorce in Miguel's family.
Homesick for New York, angry to have been robbed of his daddy, and feeling
quite alone in a light-skinned, blue-eyed world, Miguel and his little
sister Juanita learn some valuable lessons from their crazy aunt from
the Dominican Republic. Trying to keep Tia Lola a secret from
his new Vermont friends proves more difficult than Miguel thinks, and
teaching her English is even harder. But, Tia Lola's special
friendliness and charm gives her a language of her own, "a language
of understanding." She brings healing into a family that is hurting,
compassion into a family that feels alone, laughter into a family that
is crying, and sharing into a family that seems to have lost touch with
its own culture.
