Marvelous
Mattie: How Margaret E. Knight Became an Inventor The year is 1848. Mattie's father died and left her his tool box. Her mother is struggling with odd jobs to try to earn enough money to support herself and her three children. Mattie does what she can, inventing and making mechanical toys for her brothers to play with. Her original sleds are so popular that other kids are asking her to make sleds for them. They even pay $.25 each! Mattie continues to create inventions to make life easier, but no one pays attention to a GIRL. Girls can't be inventors, can they? Nevertheless, Mattie invents! Will she ever be taken seriously? This is the story of loyalty, perseverance, determination, and transformation...the transformation of a poor girl who becomes a celebrated inventor and on the way, makes a path for other women to follow. Mattie is a transformer, one of the first to prove that women have brains and abilities, too! Research Links for Marvelous Mattie: How Margaret E. Knight Became an Inventor by Emily Arnold McCully
