Woods Runner
by Gary Paulsen

From the time he was a baby, Samuel had lived in a little cabin in the forests of western Pennsylvania at a time when the British colonies were beginning the struggle for independence from England. His family had moved from the big city to escape the noise and chaos, wanting only to do hard physical work, read, and talk together. Now Samuel was 13, carried his own rifle, could track game for their food. He was most at home exploring the hills and woods.

From the east, rumblings of war reached Samuel's family occasionally, carried by those fleeing west to escape the fighting and the rule of the British. Lexington and Concord seemed a world away. But they didn't think the war that was beginning could invade their forest home or touch their lives. They didn't expect it when its horrid reality exploded in their clearing while Samuel was in the hills hunting bear ... the day his life changed forever.

In Woods Runner, Gary Paulsen, one of the most honored writers of children and young adult literature, puts a face on the American Revolution. Samuel's face. A face you won't soon forget. Alternating chapters of Samuel's story with a page or two of sobering historical facts about the war helps Woods Runner bring history alive. It is filled with patriotism, compassion, perseverance, loyalty and sacrifice. It will stir your emotions with the horror and heroism of the war and make you want to learn more about the history of the American colonies and those who sacrificed so much to enable it to become an independent country.

Recommended for grades 5 and up, Woods Runner is a story that all young people must read. The Kids' Wings literature guide invites group discussion, problem solving, research, writing, skill building, and authentic applications, all inspired by Samuel's story, the historical fiction, interwoven with historical fact. Teachers who want students to cherish and remember history will make this book part of their classroom libraries.
